Hoot Lens vs PostHog
PostHog is an open source product analytics platform that also offers session replay, feature flags, experiments, surveys and error tracking. Hoot Lens does one narrower job: session replay, click heatmaps and snags, with heatmaps kept apart by release, page revision, variant and device class, and with an agent interface for acting on what the visits show. Choose PostHog if you want analytics, flags and experiments in one platform, or you want to self-host. Choose Hoot Lens if the question is "what went wrong in this page, and did our fix help", and you want a coding agent to answer it.
Competitor details on this page were checked on 7 October 2026 against PostHog's public documentation, pricing page and repository. Where a detail could not be confirmed, this page says so or stays general.
At a glance
| Topic | Hoot Lens | PostHog |
|---|---|---|
| Core product | Session replay, click heatmaps, snags, funnels, traffic and a before and after check for changes | Product analytics, session replay, feature flags, experiments, surveys, error tracking and more |
| Open source and hosting | Hosted service | Open source (MIT, apart from an enterprise directory), hosted cloud or self-hosted |
| Heatmaps | Separate for each page group, release, page revision, variant and device class | Clicks, mouse movement, dead clicks, rageclicks and scroll maps, by URL with a viewport accuracy setting |
| Frustration signals | Snags: pile-ups (three or more clicks on the same spot within a second), no-shows and misfires | Rageclicks (three clicks within about 30 pixels in a second) and dead clicks |
| Agent access | Hosted MCP server with sign-in at https://mcp.hootlens.com/mcp, a local MCP server and a REST API | An official hosted MCP server with OAuth or a personal API key, covering analytics, flags, experiments, replays and more |
| Experiments | Before and after check for changes; not an A/B test | A/B experiments built on feature flags |
| Privacy defaults | Always-on floor for passwords, payment fields, one-time codes and data-hoot-private regions | All input elements masked by default; text unmasked by default with opt-in masking selectors |
| Pricing | Free plan and three paid plans, listed below | Usage-based, with a free allowance that includes 5,000 session recordings a month on the pricing page we checked |
Where Hoot Lens is different
- A narrow tool with a sharp question. Hoot Lens does not try to be a product analytics suite. Every screen is about where visits stall and whether a change helped.
- Cohorts that stay separate. A heatmap is one page group, page version, revision and device class. Device classes are three buckets (desktop, tablet, mobile), never exact pixel sizes.
- Did it help? Log a change, then compare conversions and snags for the days before and after, with a verdict in plain words. It is a before and after comparison, not an A/B test.
- A privacy floor that settings do not lower, with Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track always turning recording off.
- Flat, plan-based pricing rather than per-event usage, which makes the cost of watching visits easy to predict.
When to choose PostHog instead
- You want product analytics, feature flags, A/B experiments and surveys in one platform, and replay as part of it.
- You want to self-host or keep the code open source.
- You need mobile app coverage. PostHog documents session replay for web and mobile, while Hoot Lens records websites in mobile browsers and has no native app SDK.
- You need real A/B tests with randomization and statistics. Hoot Lens does not assign visitors to variants.
- You want its MCP server's wider tool surface across analytics and flags.
When to choose Hoot Lens
- You want the shortest path from a real visit to a fix: findings, a heatmap of the element, a replay of the moment, and a check afterward.
- You compare releases or page versions and need the data kept apart.
- You want an agent to read evidence and log changes with limited, revocable access that can never change settings.
- You want flat monthly pricing for replay and heatmaps.

What we could not verify
We did not confirm from a fetched PostHog page whether its heatmaps separate by release or by variant, or bucket devices by named class. PostHog's per-unit prices for replay, flags and surveys beyond its free allowances are on its pricing page and are not repeated here. We also did not confirm the default cookie and consent behavior of its JavaScript SDK. Check PostHog's current pricing and documentation before deciding.
