Hoot Lens vs Hotjar
Hotjar, now part of Contentsquare, is a hosted tool for heatmaps, session recordings, surveys and feedback, with a broad feature set and a free plan. Hoot Lens is narrower: session replay, click heatmaps and snags, built so that people and coding agents can read the same evidence, with heatmaps kept apart by release, page revision, variant and device class. Choose Hotjar if you want surveys and feedback in the same tool. Choose Hoot Lens if you want an agent to investigate and verify changes through MCP.
Competitor details on this page were checked on 7 October 2026 against Hotjar's and Contentsquare's public pages. Where a page could not be read, this page says so or stays general.
At a glance
| Topic | Hoot Lens | Hotjar |
|---|---|---|
| Core product | Session replay, click heatmaps, snags, funnels, traffic and a before and after check for changes | Heatmaps, session recordings, surveys and feedback, funnels, and error and performance monitoring |
| Heatmaps | Separate for each page group, release, page revision, variant and device class | Click, scroll and move maps, with separate desktop, tablet and mobile heatmaps |
| Frustration signals | Snags: pile-ups (three or more clicks on the same spot within a second), no-shows and misfires | A frustration score and rage click detection |

| Always-on privacy floor | Password, payment and one-time-code fields and data-hoot-private regions are never recorded in any preset | See Hotjar's privacy documentation for its masking defaults |
| Pricing | Free plan and three paid plans, listed below | Free plan listed at up to 200,000 sessions a month; paid plans on their pricing page |
Where Hoot Lens is different
- Built for agents. Hoot Lens has its own MCP server with sign-in and revocable access. An agent can list projects, read findings and heatmaps, read a visit as a short narrative, log a change it shipped and ask whether the change helped. It can never change settings, goals or members, or delete recordings, whatever it was granted.
- Cohorts that stay separate. A heatmap is one page group, page version, revision and device class. A redesign never muddies the version before it, and desktop never mixes with mobile.
- Did it help? Log a change and compare conversions and snags for the days before and after, with a verdict in plain words. It is a before and after comparison, not an A/B test.
- A privacy floor that settings do not lower. Presets (full, balanced, strict) and consent modes (implied, required) are set per project and enforced in the browser, then checked again by the collector. Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track always turn recording off.
- Observed behavior, not diagnosis. Hoot Lens reports clicks and what the page did. It does not label visitors' emotions.
When to choose Hotjar instead
- You want surveys, feedback widgets or user interviews in the same tool as heatmaps and recordings.
- You want a larger free allowance of sessions: Hotjar's public page lists up to 200,000 sessions a month on its free plan, while the Hoot Lens free plan is smaller (see the plans below).
- You want a vendor with a broad experience analytics platform behind it, including error and performance monitoring.
- Your team works in the Hotjar interface already, and agents are not part of the workflow.
When to choose Hoot Lens
- You want a coding agent to find problems from real visits, make a change and check its effect, with every claim tied to a recording ID.
- You compare releases or page versions and need the data kept apart, not blended.
- You want a small, predictable plan with a clear privacy floor, and no survey or feedback tools to configure.

What we could not verify
Hotjar's help pages could not be read in full when this page was written, so details such as its rage click definition, its default masking rules and its paid plan prices are left to its own documentation. We did not find a statement that its heatmaps are separated by release or page version in the pages we read, which may mean the feature does not exist or only that it is not documented there. Check Hotjar's current pricing and documentation before deciding.
