Hoot Lens vs Microsoft Clarity
Microsoft Clarity is a free behavior analytics service with session recordings, heatmaps and AI summaries, and no traffic limits. Hoot Lens is a paid product with a free tier, narrower in scope, and built so that coding agents can read its evidence over MCP, with heatmaps kept apart by release, page revision, variant and device class. Choose Clarity if free, uncapped recordings and heatmaps are what you need. Choose Hoot Lens if you want an agent-first workflow and cohorts that never blend versions of a page.
Competitor details on this page were checked on 7 October 2026 against Microsoft's public Clarity pages and documentation. Where a detail could not be confirmed, this page says so or stays general.
At a glance
| Topic | Hoot Lens | Microsoft Clarity |
|---|---|---|
| Core product | Session replay, click heatmaps, snags, funnels, traffic and a before and after check for changes | Session recordings, heatmaps and AI insights |
| Price | Free plan and three paid plans, listed below | Described by Microsoft as free forever, with no traffic limits |
| Heatmaps | Separate for each page group, release, page revision, variant and device class | Click, scroll, area, conversion and attention maps, for mobile, desktop and tablet, with dead click and rage click views |
| Frustration signals | Snags: pile-ups (three or more clicks on the same spot within a second), no-shows and misfires | Dead clicks and rage clicks |
| Agent access | Hosted MCP server with sign-in at https://mcp.hootlens.com/mcp, a local MCP server and a REST API | An MCP server integration, announced in 2025, that uses a Data Export API token |
| Privacy | Always-on floor for passwords, payment fields, one-time codes and data-hoot-private regions; presets and consent modes per project | Masking modes (strict, balanced and relaxed) with input boxes masked in all modes; explicit consent required for visitors in the EEA, UK and Switzerland |
| Data retention | Set per project, up to your plan's limit (see the plans below) | Data is available for up to 30 days from recording, per Microsoft's FAQ |
Where Hoot Lens is different
- Built for agents. Hoot Lens's MCP server has sign-in, revocable access and tools for findings, heatmaps, session narratives, funnels, traffic and change impact. An agent can log the change it shipped and later ask whether it helped.
- Cohorts that stay separate. A heatmap is one page group, page version, revision and device class, so a redesign never blends with the version before it.
- Did it help? Log a change, then compare conversions and snags for the days before and after, with a verdict in plain words. It is a before and after comparison, not an A/B test.
- A privacy floor that settings do not lower, with Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track always turning recording off.
When to choose Microsoft Clarity instead
- You need recordings and heatmaps at no cost, and your traffic is larger than a free Hoot Lens plan covers. Microsoft describes Clarity as free with no traffic limits.
- A 30-day window of data is enough for you.
- You already use other Microsoft tools and want one vendor.
- You want a feature Hoot Lens does not have, such as Clarity's attention maps and conversion maps.
When to choose Hoot Lens
- You want a coding agent to investigate and verify changes from real visits, with every claim tied to a recording ID.
- You compare releases or page versions and need the data kept apart.
- You want the privacy floor and the per-project consent controls, with clear retention you set yourself.
- You want retention longer than 30 days, which the higher Hoot Lens plans allow (see the plans below).

What we could not verify
Microsoft's documentation did not state in the pages we read whether Clarity separates heatmaps by release or by variant, or how it buckets devices beyond listing mobile, desktop and tablet. The MCP integration was described in a 2025 announcement with limits on requests and days of data, and those limits may have changed. Check Clarity's current documentation before deciding.
